Google+ and Facebook Pages: What’s the Point?

I started the day reading about macro photography and then I got sidetracked on something that I thought was big. I remembered that a few days ago Google+ enabled users to create business pages.

This is relevant because there are a lot of open science fellows over on Google+ and right now on that site it is hard for me to share my notebook pages on Google+. So I figured that a page would allow me to do just that.

Thus the IheartAnthony’s Research page was born. You can access it either by searching Google+ for that or by going to the main page of this notebook and clicking the icon in the side bar.

Unfortunately I realized that there is no way for me to stream notebook entries from here onto that page. What a downer. What’s the point of Google+ Pages if you can’t easily link content? Why would anyone want a Google+ Page?

Then I realized that Facebook already had this mechanism working well (even though I really don’t like Facebook as a promotion platform) so I created the IheartAnthony’s Research page over there as well. You can visit that page by searching on Facebook or by visiting facebook.com/thescienceofant (like my Twitter handle). I also encourage you to like it by visiting the main page of this notebook and clicking like in the sidebar. It should be noted that the feed from this notebook should be streaming over there.

Unfortunately (see where this is going?) I realized that I ignored Facebook because there is no focused community there, and I went to Google+ because you determine who gets what information. So now I have a page in two locations and neither do what I intend. Google+ won’t link content, and Facebook has no community!

So I ask, what’s the point of either if neither do promote my content how I want it to be promote? Is there a reason millions of businesses use Facebook even though it is an unfiltered mess? Is there a reason anyone is going to use Google+ even though there is absolutely no automated processes (yet)? Will there ever just be a social networking site for scientists that work as well as FriendFeed does/did (even though Facebook left it for dead)? Will my science ever be mainstream? Why didn’t I get a powerwheels for Christmas? Whhhhhhhhhaaaaaaaaaaaaaa???????
